Ford E40D Teardown |
| This Ford F-350 is owned by a landscaping company and is used for extensive towing and plowing duty. Due to the extensive use of these kinds of vehicles transmissions and other driveline components are more likely to fail prior to expected lifetimes. This specific one was used until it was no longer functional and the it was brought here to Meenan Transmissions. |
This is the first stage of disassembly of the Ford E4OD transmission. After removal of the transmission pan, the valve body and solenoid pack of the transmission are exposed. |
Extreme temperatures from heavy duty use and extensive slippage has caused transmission fluid to be burnt and damaged deteriorating its hydraulic and lubrication properties. |
Here we can see the valve body, accumulator body, and solenoid pack assemblies are removed. |
Here we have removed the pump assembly from the transmission case. This part will now be inspected to ensure proper clearance. A difference of only a few thousandths of an inch are what sepporate a good pump from one that needs to be replaced. |
This image shows the inside of the transmission The item in view is the center support. This item contains a bearing that is prone for failure and id replaced with every rebuild. |
Here we see some of the first set of gears and clutch drums removed from the transmission case. |
This clutch drum is a very good example of clutch failure. The clutches in their drum were slipping so badly that it cooks the transmission fluid onto the drum. Clutch drums can be so severely overheated during severe slippage it can reach temps high enough to weld parts together or damage the heat treating of the component creating a mechanical compromise thus requiring component replacement. |

Here is another veiw of the damaged drum. |
Here all assemblies of the transmission have been removed from the transmission case. |
Extreme temperatures and friction have caused the clutches pictured here to be incinnerated. |
Parts to be cleaned before reinstallation. |

Transmission case after cleaning: ready to accept new upgraded internal moving parts. |
Again, due to the extreme operating conditions and extensive contamination the original soleniod pack is replaced. Control solenoids are critical for proper function of the transmssion. Here is a side by side comparison of the original solenoid pack (left) and the new solenoid pack (right.) Having the latest design solenoid pack is critial for the performance and durability of the transmission. |

Pictured here are the cleaned and inspected internal parts before reassembly. |
Heavy duty valve body upgrade modification package improves functions of the transmission including but not limited to shift duration accumulation properties, torque converter lock up function, and pressure regulation improvements. , and |

Shown here are two different planetary gears of the transmission. The planetary carriar shown on the left is made aluminum and does not have the torque capacity of the steel upgrade on the right. These parts changes are crucial on HD and commercial applications. |
